We need a new fence...let's come up with a plan to replace it.
The fence is being removed on Monday 7/24
Posts will be replaced on Tuesday 7/25
The new panels will be built on Wednesday 7/26
They will be installing a 6' horizontal shadowbox style fence, in cedar
Posts will be placed every 6 feet, instead of every 8
As part of this replacement, we will rip out the blue spruce tree in our backyard
Amy & Rich are looking to replace the ~22 year old fence in their backyard, as posts are starting to lean heavily and a few sections are starting to fall down. The fence is in desperate need of replacement before the end of the summer. We're not confident that it will stay standing for another year.
Our goal is to replace the fence with a "good neighbor fence"; i.e. one that looks the same from both sides. The fence is shared with 4 properties, so this website was made to help make some decisions regarding the fence, to help coordinate when the replacement happens, etc.

Pros:
Looks great on both sides

We have observed the significant impact that wind has had on the fence at this property over time, leading us to seriously consider installing a shadowbox style fence. We are inclined towards a horizontal shadowbox style, but we are open to other suggestions as well. Our primary objective is to ensure everyone is satisfied with the decision.
One of the main reasons we favor the shadowbox style is its ability to withstand wind better than most privacy fences. The gaps in the shadowbox design allow the wind to pass through, minimizing damage caused by strong winds. Moreover, this design allows pleasant air flow into our yards, unlike most privacy fences that block summer breezes. Additionally, the shadowbox style is highly compatible with various fence planters.
In general, wooden shadowbox fences are stylish and aesthetically pleasing from every angle, providing a uniform look from both sides, unlike most standard privacy fences. When you view a vertical shadowbox fence head-on, it appears as solid as a privacy fence, but when observed from an angle, you can see through the pickets. This visual effect is mostly eliminated with the horizontal style.

Determine what style of fence will work best for everyone
Determine a material for the fence
The options would be a pressure treated pine or cedar. Cedar costs about 20% more, but has a lifespan of ~20 years if taken care of. Also, I believe that the current fences in everyone's yards are cedar, so it would probably be good to match materials.
We have contracted with Prietos Landscaping & Construction for replacement of the fence in the middle of July (I'll update with dates when I have more specific information). We have worked with Prietos before, and they have a great portfolio of fence and patio work (unfortunately much of it is not online).

Is a permit needed?
We are zoned as "Urban standard density residential zone (R-2)" . Fences not more than six (6) feet in height are permitted within or on all property lines. A permit is not needed for a new fence unless it exceeds seven (7) feet in height.
What rules do we need to be aware of when replacing the fence?
